The cost of a one-year Military Images subscription has been $24.95 for a quarter-century. Keeping the price low has been part of my commitment to keep the magazine affordable.
Much has changed since our last increase!
Back in 2000, we published six 48-page issues per year, totaling 288 pages. The issues featured sepia covers and black-and-white interior photographs. The issues were only available in print.
Today, we publish four 80-page issues annually, totaling 320 pages. The issues are full color. We also offer a digital edition that includes a PDF replica of the print issue, and access to a premium, password-protected site. Additionally, the full run of the magazine is available through JSTOR, a nonprofit that digitally preserves scholarly publications to advance research and teaching.
All these changes have added expenses. Much of these costs have been offset by our subscriber base and advertisers. However, when Covid-19 struck and became a pandemic, we experienced skyrocketing costs for high-quality paper stock. Meanwhile, postage rates dramatically increased. As a result, our overall costs have grown by about 20 percent.
We’re not alone. All of our peer publications have experienced the same financial pressures. One of them, Civil War Times, ended its historic run earlier this year.
To meet current financial realities, the cost of a one-year subscription will change from $24.95 to $30.00. This increase will allow us to continue publishing our print edition with the same quality, page count, and frequency that you’ve come to expect.
Many publishers worry about raising prices. I do, too. Considering the immense flow of information available to students of the Civil War, and the vast number of content creators across platforms, the choices can seem endless. The cost of entry for many of these resources does not include money—your action to hit a like or subscribe button, and/or sharing your personal information, can generate revenue for the creators.
However, I believe Military Images offers unique and relevant material that you just cannot find anywhere else. Your supportive emails, direct messages, texts and calls—and your renewals—confirm that you find MI a stimulating and valuable publication.
I am confident that you will continue to support our mission to showcase, interpret, and preserve, and renew at the new rate, effective Jan. 1, 2025.
