What Were the Popular Names for Cartes de Visite?

Today, Americans refer to the baseball-card sized paper prints that became all the rage during the Civil War as cartes de visite or CDVs. But that’s not what we called them during the 1860s, according to a survey of newspaper ads and other mentions.
