I am pleased to share the Summer 2022 issue of Military Images magazine. The origins of our cover story, “Mississippi Faces,” traces back to more than a year ago when Matt Oswalt and I discussed how to present his collection. The outcome was two galleries. The first, “Miniature Flags and Secession Cockades,” appeared in our Autumn 2021 issue. I intended to publish Matt’s Mississippi images as our cover story in the following issue, Winter 2022, but bumped it after a much anticipated profile of Richmond photographer Charles R. Rees by Dominick A. Serrano came to fruition. Then, I bumped it again to make way for kicking off the 200th birthday of Mathew Brady.
Meanwhile, as this publication planning drama played out, Matt graciously and patiently waited until now. I think we both realized that a postponement of months is a small amount of time considering that these images have survived more than 160 years.
I hope you appreciate their portraits and stories. They are worth the wait!
